Energy audits and consumption measurement

We measure and analyse the electricity use of a home or a business and tell you what the figures show: where it goes, when, and what is worth changing.

An energy audit, as we carry it out, is a measurement job: meters are fitted in the switchboard, consumption is recorded over a representative period and the result is analysed. The aim is to replace an impression ("the bill is high") with figures ("this circuit uses a third of the total and stays on all night").

What is measured and analysed

  • Consumption. How much the installation uses, in total and by circuit, across the day and the week. This is what shows what is on when it should not be, and what weighs most.
  • Power. The power peaks and the times they occur, compared with the contracted power.
  • Power quality. The voltage arriving at the installation and the disturbances the equipment puts into it. This matters mostly to businesses with machinery, and to anyone with equipment that fails or protection that trips for no apparent reason.
  • The installation itself. The state of the switchboard, the balance between phases in three-phase installations, overloaded circuits.

Is your contracted power right?

Contracted power (potência contratada) is paid for every day, whether you use it or not. With the real peaks on record, it becomes clear whether there is room to lower it, whether the trips can be solved by organising consumption differently or whether it really has to go up. ERSE, the energy regulator, provides a contracted power simulator for a first estimate; measurement confirms it with your own data.

An energy audit is not the energy certificate

The terms are often confused, and they are not the same thing.

The energy certificate (certificado energético) is a document of the building energy certification system (SCE), managed by ADENE. It gives the property an energy class, from A+ to F, and is mandatory, among other cases, on sale and on letting. It is issued by a qualified expert. BASHATEC does not issue energy certificates.

The documents of the electrical installation are something else again. They concern the safety of the installation and its connection to the grid: the execution responsibility statement (termo de responsabilidade pela execução) and, in some cases, the inspection declaration, provided for in Decreto-Lei 96/2017.

The audit we carry out produces neither of these. It produces measurements and recommendations, for the use of whoever pays the bill.

We do

  • Measurement and recording of electricity consumption
  • Analysis of contracted power and consumption peaks
  • Power quality measurement
  • Recommendations on efficiency and on changes to the installation

We don’t

  • Energy certificates for property (building energy certification)

Who it makes sense for

It makes sense when the bill has risen for no obvious reason, when the switchboard trips and nobody knows why, before investing in solar panels, a heat pump or an EV charger, and in small businesses where electricity is a significant cost and nobody knows quite what it is made of. In a small home with low consumption it probably is not worth it, and we will say so.

What to have ready

  • Electricity bills for the last twelve months.
  • Photographs of the switchboard.
  • A list of the equipment that uses most, and the times it is used.
  • For businesses, opening hours and the main equipment.

How it goes

As a rule: a first conversation and a reading of the bills; meters fitted in the switchboard, which record for the agreed period; collection and analysis of the data; delivery of the report. Where it makes sense to go on measuring after the audit, the meters can stay in place and become part of the home's automation.

What you receive

A report with the records, our reading of them and a list of recommendations in order of impact: what to change in use, what to change in the installation, what to change in the contract. Each recommendation states the measured consumption it refers to. We do not promise percentage savings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an energy audit and the energy certificate?

The energy certificate (certificado energético) is a document of the building energy certification system: it gives the property an energy class and is issued by a qualified expert. The audit we carry out is a measurement of electricity use, with recommendations. It does not produce a certificate.

Does BASHATEC issue energy certificates?

No. The energy certificate is issued by qualified experts (peritos qualificados) of the building energy certification system, SCE, managed by ADENE. A search for experts is available at sce.pt.

What is measured in an audit?

Total consumption and consumption by circuit over time, the power peaks and when they occur and, where it matters, power quality. The recording period is agreed case by case, so that it captures normal use of the installation.

Is an energy audit mandatory for my company in Portugal?

Some legal regimes impose audits on certain installations. SGCIE, for example, applies to installations with consumption of 500 toe a year or more, and has technicians recognised for the purpose. The service on this page is voluntary and does not replace the audit under that regime. If your company is covered, say so at first contact.

What savings can I expect?

We do not quote percentages before measuring. The report shows the measured consumption each recommendation refers to, so that you can judge what each change represents.

How do I know whether my contracted power is right?

ERSE, the energy regulator, provides a contracted power simulator that gives a first estimate from the appliances you have. Measurement confirms it with your own data: it records the real peaks and shows whether there is room to go down or a need to go up.
